Size and characteristics of last mile warehouses

Dawn Miller from DEP describes the size and characteristics of last mile warehouses in New York City. She explains that many of these facilities are among the largest warehouses, with some being multi-story structures, which is a recent development in the U.S.
- The majority of NYC warehouses are under 25,000 square feet
- There are about 500 warehouses above 50,000 square feet (roughly the size of a football field)
- Large last mile facilities are increasingly located near residential areas zoned for industrial use

And I live in the Columbia Street Waterfront District, so actually, the warehouses in Red Hook are are the ones that I see the most often.

And and I think as you're as you're getting at, a lot of the last mile facilities are are the are the largest.

Some of them are multi story.

And multi story warehouses was not something that we were seeing in The United States at all until a few years ago.

And so we're seeing just an intensity of activity from those warehouses.

You know, the vast majority of warehouse in New York City are under under 25,000 square feet.

That's, like, about 6,800 of the 8,000 warehouses are under 25,000 square feet.

But we have this 500 that are above 50,000 square feet, which I think someone described to me as the size of a football field.

So it's really quite a large it's really quite a large facility.

So we're, you know, I think when we're talking about big, we we are talking about really big and and we're seeing them in more and more places in the city, including in areas that are close to residential areas where those are where residents live near places that are zoned industrial especially.
