Council Member Stevens inquires about chronically absent staff and attrition rates in the Department of Correction. DOC officials provide detailed information on these issues.

  • As of the previous day, 260 staff members were identified as chronically absent.
  • The criteria for chronic absence is 12 or more sick days.
  • There is a process for staff to appeal their chronic absence designation.
  • The current number of staff identified as chronically absent is 539.
  • Attrition rates for uniform staff are 13.9% in fiscal year 2024 and 12.41% in fiscal year 2025.

This discussion highlights ongoing challenges with staff attendance and retention in the Department of Correction.

Althea Stevens
2:24:47
What's the next steps once a staff member has been processed as chronically absent?
Sherrieann Rembert
2:24:53
Once a member of service has returned back to duty, they are given a designation as chronic.
2:24:58
That member of service will receive a designation and he or she must can appeal that designation.
2:25:05
Once they appeal the designation, then it would go to the format of the warden will sign off.
2:25:14
The final recommendation would be our health management division, and our final determination would be the Office of Administration.
2:25:22
If the Office of Administration deems that the member should remain in chronic status, that member will remain in chronic status for a period of six months.
2:25:30
If the Office of Administration deems that the member should not be chronic, that member would be released, would not be on that chronic status report.
