Council Member Kevin Riley inquires about the budget allocation for fire prevention in the FDNY. Deputy Commissioner Lizette Christoff provides information on staffing numbers, while Commissioner Robert Tucker adds context about revenue generation.
- The fire prevention division is the largest civilian group in the FDNY, with 552 budgeted positions and 522 currently active.
- Fire protection inspectors make up about 350 of the 522 active positions.
- Commissioner Tucker notes that many of these positions generate revenue for the city through their tasks and inspections.

And my last question, fire prevention is something extremely important.
1:02:53
We want to make sure that these fires are being prevented.
1:02:55
How much of FDNY budget is allocated to fire prevention and what is that allocation for exactly?
Robert Tucker
1:03:02
Commissioner.
Lizette Christoff
1:03:10
So we might have to get back to you on the budget numbers because I don't know if I have them in front of me but I certainly can give you headcount numbers.
1:03:18
Okay.
1:03:19
So of our overall budgeted head count that's a little over 17,000.
1:03:26
Obviously most of that is uniformed and EMS after that.
1:03:30
But our largest civilian group is fire prevention.
1:03:33
So we are budgeted for about 552.
1:03:39
We have about 522 active right now.
1:03:44
Some of those vacancies are in the fire protection inspector title series.
1:03:48
We're looking to have a class in the coming months.
1:03:51
Fire protection inspectors make up about three fifty of the five twenty two and the other titles range from various engineering titles, various project management and plan review titles, as well as like clerical and administrative support.
Kevin Riley
1:04:08
Thank you.
Robert Tucker
1:04:09
I think it's important just to note that many of those titles are generating revenue for the city.
1:04:19
And so I think it you know, I don't know if they're revenue neutral but they're out there performing tasks that are generating revenue for the city.
Kevin Riley
1:04:29
No.
1:04:29
We appreciate that.
1:04:30
We need as much revenue as possible for our city.
1:04:33
So we do appreciate that.
1:04:34
Commissioner and your team, thank you so much for being here today.
1:04:37
Commissioner will love when you do get those fire houses if you want to come to the district and we maybe could tour them together to see the capital improvements they need.
1:04:44
But thank you.
Robert Tucker
1:04:44
Consider it done.
1:04:45
Thank you.
1:04:45
Thank
